Famously described as an ‘army with a country attached’, Prussia during the latter period of the Napoleonic Wars was a highly militarised state whose very survival depended on the strength of its army. While not as renowned as the infantry or cavalry, nor as numerous as the Landwehr militia, Prussian artillery was a crucial part of the army, delivering vital fire support to the troops. ‘Horse’ artillery, consisting of highly mobile light guns, was intended to race across the battlefield to wherever it was needed, often proving decisive in defeating enemy assaults or supporting attacks.
